Breaking down the ERAS Match application timeline

The timeline to apply for the 2023 Match is quickly shortening. Keep reading for our breakdown of everything you need to know about the final two months of the ERAS Match application timeline.

If you plan on applying for the 2024 Match, check out a quick overview of your timeline, and come back after the 2023 Match season for more.

The (Remaining) ERAS Match Application Timeline

August 1 – The Supplemental ERAS Application Opens

Starting this month (August), the Supplemental ERAS Application period opens. This allows applicants to provide more information about themselves that will help them stand out to residency directors. If you choose to fill out a supplemental application you will be able to fill out geographic information, relevant work, volunteer, and research experience, and select your preference signaling.

The supplement application is free and optional. However, it is only available to applicants of 16 specialties.

September 7 – ERAS Residency Application Period Opens

This is the first day you can begin submitting your ERAS application to residency programs. All applications submitted throughout the three-week submission period will be dated September 28. Programs will not be able to access applications until the 28th.

September 15 – The NRMP 2023 Match Cycle Registration Period Opens

The NRMP is a separate organization from ERAS. However, it is an equally important part of the Match process and requires its own registration.

ERAS is the system where applicants build their applications. NRMP is the main Match portal where related communication takes place.

September 16 – The Supplemental ERAS Application Deadline

With just under two weeks before the ERAS application deadline, the supplemental application closes. This will be the last day to preference signal your top programs.

September 28 – Submit Your Application

September 28 is the final date to submit ERAS applications for the 2023 Match. This is also the first day residency programs will be able to begin reviewing applications. All applications submitted throughout the submission period will be dated September 28, which creates a level playing field and allows applicants time to collect all application materials.

An important note: While the application deadline is September 28, ERAS recommends having letters of recommendation uploaded by September 21 to ensure they are uploaded by the application deadline.

Timeline below has changed due to COVID. The link to our video above, gives the latest timeline for 2022 match

If you are applying for the upcoming match (2019), it is best to be ECFMG certified when you apply in September 2018. In order to participate in the match, you need to have Step 1, Step 2 CS and Step 2 CK passed at least a week before rank order list deadline on February 20th, 2019. If you would like to participate in the Supplementary Offer and Acceptance Program (SOAP), you will need all exams passed at least a week before the Monday of Match Week, which will be March 11th, 2019.

Most residency programs prefer that international applicants have

all three exams finished before they offer an interview to the applicant. This is so that they can be reassured regarding your potential to pass USMLE Step 3 and your residency boards. It is always better to apply with all or at least two step scores in hand. You can update programs with the last exam score, but the earlier you have the exams done the higher chances of getting interviews. See the timeline below, in order to understand how the process works.

For the upcoming match cycle (2019): Here is a useful link regarding the match timeline – for international medical graduates (IMG’s) specifically:

https://www.ecfmg.org/eras/timeline.html

Another link for application timeline is below (However, ignore the June 7th, 2018 date for 2019 tokens. For IMG’s it is a different date).
ERAS timeline

As you can see in the above links, IMG’s can start using the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) at the end of this month (June 2018). This is what you will be using to apply to all residency programs. You can start submitting your application to programs from September 5th, 2018 onwards. Programs can only start downloading your application from September 15th, 2018 however, and all applications submitting before or on this date

will be timestamped as September 15th. September 15th is also when you can register for the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). This is the computer algorithm which helps match thousands of residency and fellowship applicants into NRMP-participating programs. Its early registration deadline is November 30th, 2018, and late registration deadline is February 20th, 2018.

This is also the NRMP withdrawal deadline. (Please understand that there are certain residency programs and certain specialties which do not participate in NRMP. If a program offers prematch, it

DOES NOT participate in NRMP and you MUST withdraw from NRMP if you accept a prematch offer. There are also certain specialties which use the San Francisco Match instead of NRMP to fill their programs. If you accept such a position, you also will have to withdraw from NRMP registration. In both of these situations, if you do not withdraw from NRMP you will be flagged for NRMP violation. This has severe consequences which include being banned from NRMP in future. More on that in a later post if you would like to know more.)

1. In order to use ERAS and work on your application and CV, you must first purchase a 2019 ERAS token, which will be available for purchase by IMG’s starting on June 21st, 2018 in

ECFMG OASIS ( https://secure2.ecfmg.org/emain.asp?app=oasis ) or the MyECFMG mobile app. If you have taken any of the USMLE step exams, you will have an account already. Log in to OASIS or the app using your USMLE ID and password. Click on “ERAS Token Request” and follow the instructions given. You will have to pay a fee for this.

2. Once you have requested a token, you will

register your token at https://apps.aamc.org/myeras-web/

3. You can now

log into ERAS and start working on your application. You can also upload documents. Some official documents will have to be uploaded through ECFMG ERAS Support Services. These will be processed by ERAS and appear on your ERAS dashboard within one to ten business days. As September 5th approaches, however, the processing time can be prolonged due to last minute rush from hundreds or thousands of applicants. Be proactive and upload whatever you can, as soon as possible to avoid delays in application. Be sure to start working on your personal statement (PS) as early as possible too!!

Our team at USMLESarthi consists of experienced panel members who can help you with your PS and ERAS application/CV. Remember that a well-made application and PS with proper grammar, sentence structure and spelling demonstrate attention to detail! And even with good writing skills, it is an art to create an effective PS and CV that sells your unique journey and background profile well.

4. Note: If your school does not participate in the EMSWP portal (You will know if your school participates in the portal), then you will be uploading all official documents regarding your education credentials. ERAS advises that you upload the

Medical School Performance Evaluation (MSPE) no later than September 22nd if you want your MSPE to be transmitted on October 1st (All MSPE’s are transmitted on October 1st to programs you’ve applied). Please ensure that you upload this on time.

5. You can start certifying your ERAS application and apply to programs from September 5th, 2018. Programs will only be able to download applications from September 15th onwards, however, and your applications will all be date-stamped as September 15th if you submit between the 5th and 15th. This is something recent that ERAS has done, in order to reduce the server crash which occurs when applicants all rushed to apply on Sept 15th in previous years.

You must certify your ERAS application before applying to programs. Once you certify ERAS, you cannot modify anything other than Personal Information section. You can still upload documents and letters of recommendation. Any professional updates after certifying ERAS will have to be conveyed by contacting programs directly.

6. Once you have certified ERAS and applied to programs: Relax! Waiting for programs to contact you and offer invites can be stressful and anxiety-inducing, and it is best to stay busy during this time period. Start preparing for interviews. (See link above for our services!! Interview performance is one of the most important factors that a program director considers when ranking applicants.) You should also

register for NRMP ( http://www.nrmp.org/applicant-registration/ ) and update your ERAS Personal Information section with your NRMP ID number. Keep in mind that the ERAS ID number and NRMP ID number are two different entities. NRMP ID is only needed for ranking and SOAP. ERAS ID is what you use when communicating with programs. If you have any updates to your CV, new letters of recommendation or any new exam results you can email program coordinators with the update. Unfortunately you cannot change the text of your CV once you certify ERAS.

7. Once interviews are underway: Keep note of the date when you can start ranking programs. This will be January 15th, 2019. Keep in mind that you can only rank a program if you’ve interviewed there. A program will not rank an applicant they have not personally met or interviewed.

8. The

rank order list (ROL) deadline is February 20th, 2019. This is also the NRMP withdrawal deadline.

9. Once you’ve submitted your ROL, its time to relax and let the NRMP computer algorithm do its work!

10.

Match Week: March 11-15, 2019. The Monday of Match Week: Applicants will receive an email regarding whether they matched. If an applicant has not matched, and if the applicant is eligible for SOAP, the applicant will have access to the unfilled program list and can apply for the unfilled slots. Three rounds of SOAP occur, and it ends on Thursday, March 14th, 2019. On Friday, March 15th, 2019: Matched applicants will find out which program they have matched to!

We hope this helps!! Please keep asking questions and we’ll be happy to answer. Have a wonderful weekend everyone and good luck for the upcoming Match!!!
