I heard that Smaug in the movie is about 140 meters long. How big is Balerion? All I know is that it could hold adult mammoths in its jaws.

I honestly feel like Smaug would win this.

Tolkien's Dragon's are very resistant to heat while Game Of Thrones Dragons are comparatively not. Balerion is only a bit bigger than Smaug. But the somewhat small difference in size doesn't make up for the fact that Smaug's fire is hot enough to turn gold into liquid metal and the difference in intelligence is huge.

Balerion is literally just an animal, LotR dragons have human-like intellect. Smaug wins. He is also much more durable, and completely fire-proof.

ASOIAF dragons are immune to fire.

Balerion's fire melted the largest castle in the world.

And I'm not sure Smaug is close to Balerion's size considering Balerion can shadow entire towns while flying over them.

@laiks stake: Compared to the other Dragons that Smaug is smaller than he's not that much bigger. It's nothing Smaug's intellect and vastly superior firepower couldn't deal with. Also in the books at least Smaug was physically strong enough to destroy large parts of The Lonely Mountain and was capable of MUCH higher flight speed than Balerion. Balerion is only bit faster than Horses while Smaug is probably in the Hypersonic to High Hypersonic range. As he can dodge arrows from Elf Marksman and likely even Lightning Magic.

Balerion being immune to fire wouldn't really be enough here. The difference in heat resistance between Smaug and Game of Thrones Dragons is too much. Smaug could dive into boiling liquid metal or a volcano and probably be fine.

Smaug has no confirmed size, and I don't think Balerion has either. I've seen calcs putting Smaug at roughly 120 meters, and both smaller and bigger. Its worth noting that while Balerion's hype is that he engulfs towns in his shadow (which still allows him to be significantly smaller than the town), Smaug in the books destroyed laketown when he crashed into it upon being killed (still allows him to be smaller since how he'd pick up extra weight, but to destroy the entire town he would need to be much larger than whats needed to just shadow it). However ultimatively, neither dragon has a confirmed size.

Note that it also does depends a bit on the versions. If its show vs movie, we can actually see that Smaug was somewhat larger:

But yeah if its books, we simply can not know. However Smaug has much better feats, hype, and middle-earth dragons typically are stronger overall. Not to mention a massive gap in intelligence
