I purchased a used D750 which I plan to use as a second body and also because after selling my DSLRs, found that I really miss shooting with them.

I plan to use the D750 + 50mm combo for some portrait work and was wondering which 50mm lens you would recommend.

Im not worried about silent wave motor so much or even focus speed. Both of which would be nice to have but not mandatory. Im most interested in center sharpness. The other factors are important as well, but to me sharpness is my first concern.

Any thoughts you can give me would be greatly appreciated and I thank you for your time and expertise.

best to you,

Rick

Hey Rick. You should investigate the Sigma Art 50mm 1.4.

The Nikon sales people disguised as regular forum members will be here any moment to say you should get the 50 1.8G and that Sigma lenses won't be compatible with your future Nikon cameras.

Hi Rick,

Disclaimer: I am not a Nikon sales person disguised as a regular forum member.

My recommendation would be

Nikon 58mm 1.4 ..........................first choice

or Zeiss Planar T 50mm 1.4.........second choice (though manual focus)

or 50mm 1.4G................................third choice

or 50mm 1.4D................................fourth choice

If you do not shoot wide open at 1.4 or 1.8, then Nikon 60mm 2.8G macro and you will get some amazing results with this lens for portraits.

I had the 50 1.4D, 1.8G and the Zeiss Planar, by f4-f5.6 they are all good, but if you want shallow depth of field and shoot at f1.4-f2.8 the Sigma Art is much better. However, it's a heavy lens (one of the reasons I switched to the Z system and got a f1.8 S which is even better than the Sigma Art), but if it's the only lens you carry, not much of a problem.

I use the 1.4g for portraits and the 1.8d for some landscapes. Don’t bother with 1.4 for the d750. Shutter speed not fast enough without a filter most of the time.

Also consider the Tamron 45mm f/1.8 VC. I think it's the only stabilized normal prime for the F mount. It's fairly sharp wide open (similar to the Nikon 50mm f/1.8G), and very sharp one stop down. The bokeh and overall drawing are rounded and lovely. One of my favorite lenses.

The Nikon 50 mm f/1.4G is good.

The Zeis Otus 55 mm f/1.4 is very sharp.

For portraits the Nikon 85 mm f/1.8G is very nice. So is the Nikon AF-S 105 mm f/1.4E ED.

It really depends on budget and needs.

If it is a go to lens and/or you have a need for uber shallow DOF, then a NIKKOR 50 1.4 AF-G is a great lens.

If the budget is tighter then a NIKKOR 50 AF-D 1.4 used is also an excellent choice.

If it’s a lesser used lens and/or if the budget is extremely tight then a NIKKOR 50 1.8 AF or AF-D are both quite sharp and featherweight glass.

All are very sharp.

All with focus anywhere between very fast and lightning fast as a 50 has a very light mass to move.

The 50 1.8 AF and AFD is a tad softer in the corners at f10 or smaller aperture … but certainly not bad.

And, for what it’s worth, I am not …. nor have I ever been … a NIKKOR/NIKON sales rep.

Nikon D50 Nikon D7200 Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR II Nikon AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/4D ED-IF Nikon AF Nikkor 35mm f/2D +10 more

None that you've listed are sharp wide open.

I've owned multiple copies of every f mount, auto focus, Nikon 50mm lens ever produced, specifically in search of a sharp one. Trust me....been there, done that. Nikon doesn't have one.

You wanna make an impression? For the D750, it's the 58 F1.4... far better subject isolation with an amazing 'look and feel' that you just can't aquire from those bland 50mm offerings. Don't take my word for it... take this guy's...

The 1.4g is very similar, except it’s a different focal length. Does it make a difference? Yes it does. I have owned the Tammy three times because I like the rendering. But It’s heavy and af is slow.

I didn't realize it was a requirement... LOL! If you would have taken the time to watch the video, you would have seen several images captured with this lens. I rented a 58 from Samys Camera several years ago. It's a MAJORLY expensive optic for a 'close to standard' lens. I was pleasantly surprised and happy with the results.

I’m sorry but I’ve watched this video twice now and it’s just 17minutes of some guy in a black and white movie telling you how great this lens is. The Nikon 50mm lens’s are all different,, I have had them all at some point. And I know that having pretty bokeh doesn’t stop you taking bland photographs!

But why this guy wants centre sharpness as a priority for a 50mm portrait lens is a mystery.

Not everyone wants a soft 50 with a ton of chromatic aberration and haze wide open.

Interesting... so do you have a link showcasing this 'ton of chromatic aberration and haze' in your comment... cause that's NOT what I've seen while using it... and the video I posted does NOT confirm your statement...

Hate to hurt your feelings Gary but I couldn't care less about the video you posted a link to

Maybe it wasn't obvious enough, but Hussar43 specifically made his comment about a 50mm lens, in which I replied making reference to 50mm lenses. Are you referring to the 58mm 1.4?

If you were referring to 50's as Hussar43 and myself were, here is a direct comparison of a Nikon 50mm 1.4D to a Sigma Art 40 which has very similar center sharpness to the Sigma Art 50, the reason I recommended the Sigma Art 50 to him, as he stated he was most interested in center sharpness and wanted a 50mm focal length. These are heavy crops, showing lens performance in the center. Very little chromatic aberration here under the shooting conditions but plenty of softness and haze/glow (whatever you prefer to call it) in the Nikon 50mm shot.

These images were only cropped, then exported as jpegs. No other editing.
