We came across an issue where some users were unable to use their keyboard at the remote login screen on Windows Server 2008. The keyboard simply didn’t work when they were required to enter a password which prevented them from accessing the remote machine.

There’s a number of issues that may cause such behavior, however, none of them are related to FixMe.IT. Here’s a quick workaround that will help you get your keyboard up and running at the remote login screen.

Looking for an easy solution to fix Windows issues remotely? FixMe.IT is the world’s #1 rated remote support app that allows to connect to any remote PC in 3 easy steps. Click here to see how it works.

  1. Open the Ease of Access icon located in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
  2. Choose the Type without keyboard [On-screen keyboard] option and click OK.

After this, your local keyboard will start working again and you will be able to enter the login credentials without using the on-screen keyboard.

  • Hi there. On MSTSC options click in local resources and in keyboard, select remote computer...

  • I run into this if the user has any product that uses VNC or its half brothers tightVNC, UltraVNC, JoinMe, Gotomypc, etc.

The user needs to make sure those are not running when the RDP connection is made.

Also if they are using a web meeting to share the RDP session, they need to connect to the web meeting inside the RDP connection, not there desktop.

In the properties of the RDP session [Local Resources tab] Under Keyboard, select On this computer in Apply Windows key combinations list.

  • The users aren't running any 3th party software while they're starting an RDP Session

i've also tested there user session on my own computer and laptop. Result was the same, so it's not depending on the computer they're connecting from.

must say, i'm not sure i have tested with the "windows key combination" in local resources.
[ can't test this now because the server was rebooted and there is currently no issue ]

  • Today it happend again, just random.

So, i had to reboot :[

  • JonasV,

I have been struggling with this for three weeks now.  I have been using my iPad to remote in because my keys on my laptop didn't work [the tab and control keys would work, but not the letters or numbers].  So, I changed the "Windows key combination" in the RDP file, double-clicked and my keyboard now works fine in Remote Desktop.

  • Did you find a way to fix this server problem? I am experiencing%u2003 the same problem...

  • I have found a small fix for it when it comes up on my Server 12 R2. A user will bring up a login page to connect and if you hit the win key the host start menu will come up, then re-select into the user name field on the RDP login page and it will work fine.

I don't have yet a fix for this from a server side to prevent it from happening. Let me know if this works for you.

    Ben S

I was working in RDP the other night when my keyboard quit working. I am not sure what I did, but I can't seem to get it working again. The keyboard works fine when not in Remote Desktop. Please help!

We have a virtual Windows Server 2012 R2 with Remotedesktop enabled. When we access the Server over rdp the mouse is fully working but I cannot type any key, if I access the Server over the Hyper-V console the keyboard is working fine.
