Như vậy: “Put yourself in somebody’s shoes” – Đặt mình vào hoàn cảnh của người khác, để hiểu và cảm thông được tình huống/ vấn đề của người đó.

1. Put yourself in someone’s position/shoes: to imagine that you are someone in a difficult situation, and imagine how that person feels - đặt mình vào vị trí của người khác

Example: Put yourself in my place – I was scared, and I had nobody to talk to.

2. Walk in someone’s shoes = be in someone’s shoes: Ở vào hoàn cảnh người khác, đặt mình vào hoàn cảnh người khác

Example: I wouldn’t want to be in your shoes when your father finds out about the dent you put in his car.

3. The boot/shoe is on the other foot: the situation is now the opposite of what it was, especially because someone who was weak now has power - chiếc ủng giờ đây đã ở chân khác, [tình thế đã đảo ngược]

Example: The shoe is on the other foot and he is the one asking for help this time.

4. If the cap fits [wear it] = if the shoe fits [wear it]: used to tell someone that they should accept a criticism that another person has made - nếu giày vừa với chân thì cứ đeo nó đi. Câu này muốn nói, ám chỉ, phản ảnh đúng sự thật về con người của bạn thì bạn nên chấp nhận và trách nhiệm về điều đó.

Example: I know you don't like being called unreliable, but if the shoes fits, wear it.

5. Fill someone’s shoes: to do someone’s job or accept someone’s responsibilities - kế nhiệm một người khác và thực thi nhiệm vụ đó một cách tốt đẹp.

Example: The senator will step down this year, but two well-known Republicans are ready to fill his shoes.

6. Down-at-the-heels [a] /ˈdɑʊn·ət·ðəˈhilz/: wearing old clothes, or in a bad condition, because of not having much money - tàn tạ, xơ xác [bề ngoài]

Example: She had a decidedly down-at-heel appearance.
