Why does Warzone take so much space PS4

Decided to check the game out. First I had to clear about 40GB of storage and I saw it had to install 99GB for the game. It just installed, and now is telling me there's an update that I need to clear at least 89GB to install it (I don't know what the actual size of the update is because I'd need to clear at least 2 other whole games to start installing it, but I know it's at least 89GB apparently).

Is this for real? Does this new game, only 2wks old, require almost a quarter of a Terabyte of space? Is it THAT big?

EDIT: So every couple weeks someone finds this post and comments on it. For those of you just arriving, here's the answer:

  • "When a game updates on PS4, the entire game is copied when the patch data is applied, that way your game won’t get corrupted in a way that causes you to completely have to reinstall. It heavily lowers the cases/chances of it happening at least.

  • So if a game is 100gb, it’ll take another 100gb (plus a little more) for it to copy the entire game.

  • If that space isn’t free, then the copy process wouldn’t be possible."

Call of Duty: Warzone is one of the most popular free-to-play battle-royale shooters on the market and millions of players all over the world are playing it every day. The popularity of this game is mostly unmatched in the online competitive gaming world and one of the main reasons why is that case is because of its cross-platform availability. Warzone is available on every big platform and a new season is announced to be released soon. However, the game got under a lot of criticism because of its size. In this article, we will discuss how many GBs Call of Duty: Warzone has and why is it so big.

With Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Warzone requires around 175 GBs on the PC platform, around 120 GBs on PlayStation platforms, and 92 GB on Xbox. Call of Duty: Warzone gained insane GBs in recent years and that is because of map sizes, accessories, servers, and updates that are added monthly to Warzone. Even though Activision announced the ultimate resizing of download files, this issue is still a problem for many players.

We will analyze further what is “ballooning” download size of the game files is and what issues players have when installing Call of Duty: Warzone. Furthermore, we will list more platforms with this issue, and possibly announced fixes. If you are interested in this topic, definitely stay with us until the end of the article.

What Is the Size of Warzone For PS, PC, and Xbox?

Since its release in 2020, Call of Duty: Warzone has been a standout battle royale available on the market. Weapons, maps, combat, and just the game overall made it one of the most popular free-to-play games in the world. However, some issues occurred in recent years. Besides the obvious ones like releasing Modern Warfare 2 Remastered and Warzone 2 pretty close to each other, and reset of the whole progress players made in the Warzone, Call of Duty found itself on a critics block.

Call of Duty games always had decent download sizes, however, in the last few years, the updates and patches for the online games increased massively and started updating more often for online games. Warzone is at forefront of it since more and more players started criticizing the size of the game – tons of updates that are usually occurring periodically but still overrun most of the gaming platform storage. Even though the technology of the gaming platforms developed massively in the last two decades, and regardless of the available storage the gamer has on their computer, Warzone still takes over most of the platform’s hard disc or storage.

Why does Warzone take so much space PS4

For example, to download Call of Duty: Warzone for PlayStation 5, one needs to secure around 120 GBs of free space of their storage. This is a bit concerning since the average PlayStation 5 console has around 825 GB of free space, and taking into account that only an online free-to-play battle royale game requires that much space, is not a good look for Activision. Updates, new maps, and add-ons that are updated with the patches every month are forcing gamers to calculate and think about other games they want to play to have enough space.

On PC, Call of Duty: Warzone requires around 175 GBs of space on hard discs, which yes, is not a huge problem in comparison to gaming consoles, but updates and add-ons that are updating and working nonstop, disrupting the performances of older PCs. This is concerning since Warzone does not demand insane graphic cards for it to work properly, however, it makes older PCs work “harder”. Warzone is not the only Call of Duty game that has this issue – one user commented that Modern Warfare after the Season 5 update required over 200 GBs of hard disc space.

Xbox platforms had it a bit easier and the Warzone “only” requires around 92 GBs of its space. However, if you take into account that Xbox, as PlayStation, comes in two versions, with 500 GB and 1 TB storage, the size of the game once again poises a lot of trouble for players who have Xbox consoles with less storage space.

All in all, Call of Duty: Warzone has insane storage space requirements, but the big question here is… why?

Why Does Warzone Require That Much Storage?

According to Infinity War and Activision executives, the reason why Warzone demands that much space is because it has “tons of content”, which is true. We already mentioned massive updates that are happening monthly, adding new maps, weapons, accessories, servers, environment, and just the game itself, Warzone is truly a huge game. Moreover, Warzone shares weapons, progress, and more, with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game, which then increases the size of the game massively, especially for PC players.

These are all valid points, however, that does not explain how Warzone is the only game that just cannot in any way or form, compress their games more. In comparison, the newest installment of the biggest Call of Duty competitor, Battlefield 2042, only requires around 50 GB of space, depending on the gaming console. So why EA can compress their game and Activision can’t? Maybe Call of Duty really has more content but that is a discussion for another time.

All in all, massive updates, new content that includes maps, weapons, game mechanics, environment, in-game modes, and more, are reasons why Call of Duty: Warzone demands that much storage on gaming platforms.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has enormous size as well.

How Many Gigabytes Is Warzone For PS4?

Gaming platforms that we mentioned are all new, like PlayStation 5, however, not everyone owns a new gaming console. A lot of gamers still use PlayStation 4 as their gaming platform and are still sharing a lot of games with the new consoles. One of them is PlayStation 4, and the size of the Warzone goes from 130 to 150 GBs, which is a lot, especially for people using base consoles that have only 500 GB of storage.

All in all, Activision did promise to compress their games, especially Modern Warfare and Warzone, however, this problem won’t disappear. In a few months, we will get Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered and Call of Duty: Warzone 2, which will probably be even bigger-sized games that will force some players to think really deeply about their storage management.

In the end, this is the reality of the Call of Duty franchise and if people want to play the games, they need to adapt to its requirements, which we will probably talk about once more in the future.
