From these definitions, we can distinguish family and household as follows:

Household often refers to a domestic unit, a physical space (living spaces and possessions) and people, not necessarily related to each other (a person or group of people occupying a single dwelling).

Family, on the other hand, often refers to people who are either related to each other (a man, his wife and their children), or share the same goals and values and reside in the same place.

There could be many different families living in one household if the house is big enough to accommodate all of the people.

A family can live in only one household at a time.
