The 2023 Mazda CX-30 is one of the most affordable ways to get a genuinely fun-to-drive vehicle with the all-weather security of all-wheel drive. For 2023, Mazda has pulled off quite an impressive trick, making its base engine more powerful and more fuel-efficient at the same time. Automakers usually have to trade power for fuel economy. The CX-30 also comes with new safety gear aimed at protecting those in the rear seats. Enhanced Power, Fuel EconomyMany manufacturers saddle their subcompact SUVs with anemic engines. Mazda has always given the CX-30 an advantage with a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that could easily power bigger cars. In fact, it does — the same engine pulls heavier Mazda models like the larger CX-5 and CX-50. For 2023, Mazda engineers found a way to squeeze a few more horsepower out of the powerplant. It now makes 191 horses — 45 more than the base engine in the Kia Seltos and 33 more than the engine in the all-new Honda HR-V. More power usually means spending more at the pump. But Mazda used improved cylinder deactivation technology to squeeze more fuel economy out of the more powerful engine. It’s now good for 26 mpg in the city, 33 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg combined — competitive with the top of its class. Shoppers looking for more performance still have the option of a CX-30 with a turbocharged engine making 227 horsepower with regular fuel and 250 with premium. New Airbag, Seatbelt TechThe 2023 CX-30 is too new to have been through safety testing. But we anticipate it will perform well in crash tests. Two agencies perform crash tests on most cars sold in the United States — the federal government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the insurance industry’s Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Both gave last year’s CX-30 high marks. It earned the highest rating — 5 stars — in government tests. The IIHS gave it its highest safety award, the Top Safety Pick+ designation. The 2023 model uses the same structure and should perform just as well. But Mazda has added new rear-seat seatbelt pretensioners and rear-side airbags to better protect second-row passengers. Both front- and rear-seat passengers also get a new shin pad built into the doors. The CX-30 is still a subcompact SUV. Shoppers who will regularly carry rear-seat passengers might want to step up to the more spacious CX-5. But it’s comforting to see engineers work to make a car with good safety scores even safer. Turbo Trim GoneMany automakers have trimmed slow-selling trims from their lineups this year. A global shortage of microchips has left them unable to build as many cars as they’d like to. As a result, they’re eliminating the trim levels the fewest buyers choose to free up resources to make the ones more buyers want. Mazda found that most shoppers who wanted the more powerful turbocharged engine also wanted additional luxuries, so it removed the budget-friendly base Turbo trim. That leaves the more well-equipped Turbo Premium and Turbo Premium Plus choices for buyers who want the added grunt of up to 250 horsepower.
